Chadron State College Athletic Hall of Fame
Burley was the quarterback on the CSC football teams for three years immediately after World War II and also did the placekicking. After he kicked the extra point that allowed the Eagles to defeat Kearney 7-6 in 1947, the Chadron Record reported that he “could have run for mayor of Chadron and won in a walk.”
Burley, who wore No. 72 while quarterbacking the Eagles, was a native of Mitchell. He coached at Hemingford in 1949-51 and spent the rest of his career as a teacher, coach and principal at Carson City, Nev. In 1978, he was named Carson City’s “Man of the Year” for his community service. In 1982, the new athletic facilities at Carson High School was named the Morse R. Burley Sports Complex.
