Chadron State College Athletic Hall of Fame
John Axtell is an extremely capable radio news and sports reporter in Chadron the past 35 years. He was the “Voice of the Eagles” for 28 years both home and away for the football and basketball teams. He called 293 football games and more than 700 men’s basketball and more than 400 women’s basketball games.
Axtell estimates he traveled more than 3,500 miles with those teams annually. His memory of the games is phenomenal, and he also became well-acquainted with many of the athletes and their families. He received Chadron State’s Distinguished Service Award in 1998 for enthusiastically telling of the college’s activities over the air.
