Mary Wells was a stalwart thrower for Chadron State track and field, excelling particularly in the shot put and discus.
During her career, she placed 18 times and earned 74 points at RMAC Meets, including two gold, two silver and two bronze medals, and became a two-time All American.
Mary’s first All-American honor came as a junior when she was 7th in the discus at the National Meet. Earlier that season, she set the school record of 154-3. She qualified for Nationals in the discus each of her final three seasons.
As a senior, Mary won the shot put at five major meets, including the RMAC Indoor Meet, then was fifth at the national Meet with a throw of 46-11 ¾ to earn her second All-American laurels. Outdoors, she placed 2nd at the conference meet.
Mary’s best shot put marks were 47-6 ¼ indoors and 46-8 ¾ outdoors. When she graduated, only her sister Jacqueline, who was inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame in 2022, had a longer mark for CSC indoors and only Jacqueline and Mandy Kubo had thrown farther outdoors. Mary also placed twice at RMAC meets in the 20-pound weight throw, the hammer throw and the javelin.
Currently, Mary is a business intelligence analyst for a federal credit union in San Antonio. She recently married Jasmine Harris.
