Long was a four-year letterman in both football and wrestling for the Eagles. He was the football team’s starting center three years. Football coach Bill O’Boyle once likened him to a badger, adding that he was perhaps the most intense player he was ever around.
Long earned second-team all-conference honors as both a junior and a senior and was presented the Don Beebe Most Inspirational Player Award at the end of his senior season.
Long also was the Eagles’ heavyweight wrestler his first three years at CSC, redshirted in 1998-99, then competed at 197 as a senior. His best season was 1997-98, when he had an 18-10 record and qualified for the NCAA II National Tournament. That summer he was a member of the RMAC all-star team that wrestled in Bulgaria.
CSC coach Scott Ritzen said it helped the entire team to have Long’s enthusiasm and intensity in the wrestling room. After graduating from CSC, he earned a master’s degree from Wayne State College, was an assistant football coach at Black Hills State six years and the head coach three years. This is his fourth season as the Eagles’ head football coach.
He grew up on a ranch near Red Owl, S.D., and graduated from high school at Sturgis. He is married to his high school sweetheart, Kresi. They have three children: Kaelee, Alivia and Carson.
