Mandy Kubo originally came to Chadron State to play volleyball, but she never played that sport. Instead she became a standout thrower for the track and field team, concluding her career in 2001, owning school records in five throwing events.

She won two firsts and a second at the RMAC Outdoor Meet and claimed two All- American honors her senior year.

During an interview as her career was concluding, Mandy said she was “stuck on 44 feet” in the shot put through her junior season, and knew she needed to “learn to spin” on her throws. She said she spent all summer developing the technique.

During her senior season, she threw the shot put 46-feet, 11-inches indoors. In the spring, she stretched her outdoor shot put mark to 49-2 ½. As a senior, she also increased her best in the weight throw to 49-9, threw the hammer 158-4 and sailed the discus 146-10.

She was eighth in the shot (44-6¾) at the National Indoor Meet and fourth (48-10) at the National Outdoor Meet her senior year.

She and her husband, Skip, moved to Crawford four years ago to take over his family’s water well service.

She is a medical technologist at the Fall River Hospital in Hot Springs, S.D.
