Kirwin was a three-time all-Nebraska College Conference selection and received all-District 11 honors and was placed on the state college all-star teams chosen by the Omaha World-Herald and Lincoln Journal-Star as a senior in 1969. He was voted the Eagles’ outstanding defensive player that year.
Kirwin was a teacher, coach and administrator at several Nebraska schools during his career. He compiled a 70-35 record as the football coach at Butte, Neb., his hometown, early in his career.  After that, he went into administration and has been at Banner County High at Harrisburg, Fairbury, Ainsworth and Spalding Academy, all in Nebraska. His wife, Darla, ran the switchboard at CSC while he was a student.
Kirwin’s parents were among the many who were ardent supporters of the Eagles while their offspring was playing. They attended 34 of his 37 football games, and calculated that they traveled 9,500 miles just to watch him play the 18 games that were in Chadron.
