Chadron State College Athletic Hall of Fame
Josh Schommer was a dynamic wrestler who filled the Eagles’ 157-pound weight class four straight years and finished his career with 104 victories. Â
He had an outstanding sophomore season, when he placed at every tournament, including fifth at the National Tournament to earn All-American honors. Â
Schommer won 40 matches that season, still the Chadron State record.
After that season, there was a target on Schommer’s back and opponents were well aware of his abilities. Â
As a junior, he was fourth at the Cowboy Open and third at both the Nebraska-Kearney and Midwest Classic Tournament while finishing with at 25-14. His senior year he had a 24-12 record, was first at the Fort Hays Open, second at the Midwest Classic and the runner-up at the West Regional Tourney to qualify for nationals again.
Both of Josh’s parents, Jerry and Sandy (Mathis), were Chadron natives. His younger brother Joel was a standout of CSC’s national-ranked football teams in 2006-08.
Josh is a partner in Wahoo Lockers, a federally-inspected meat packing plant in Wahoo, Nebraska.
His longtime girlfriend, Rachel Kennan of Valentine, also attended Chadron State and is a behavioral analyst who works with autistic children.
