Chadron State College Athletic Hall of Fame
Mark Pfeifer, of Garden Valley, California, transferred to Chadron State after being named the Bay Valley Conference Wrestler of the Year as a sophomore at 149 pounds for Sacramento Community College.
During his first year with the Eagles in 2005-06, Pfeifer had a 29-9 record. He went 5-0 at the Fort Hays State Open Tourney, was third at the Nebraska-Kearney Tournament, second at Dickinson State’s Tourney, was the champion at the California Collegiate Tourney that San Francisco State hosted and was fourth at the West Regional Tourney, qualifying him for the DII National Tourney, where he finished 1-2.
As a senior, Pfeifer won 10 of his first 14 matches, then went on to win the 149-pound West Regional championship. That qualified him for nationals, where he won fifth place and earned All-American honors.
During Pfeifer’s runs to a regional title and a fifth-place national finish, he defeated three wrestlers that he had lost to earlier in the season.
That gave Pfeifer a 34-12 season record and a 63-21 mark at Chadron State. He returned to CSC the next year, helped coach the Eagles and earned his degree in 2008. Pfeifer continues to live in the Sacramento area and helps coach high school athletic teams.
