For the CSC Track team, Jack Sides concentrated on the high jump. He won that event 16 times, cleared at least 6-foot-8 on 17 occasions and was an All-American as a junior in 2006 when he went 6-11 at the National Indoor Meet.Â
At the first outdoor meet that spring, he set the Eagles’ record of 7-½ during the D-II Challenge at Emporia State, where athletes from 22 schools from nine states competed. The highlight of his senior year was winning the RMAC outdoor championship by going 6-10 ¼ during a jump-off after he had tied for first during the finals at 6-8 ¼.Â
The next weekend, Jack married Avery Shaw, a distance runner on the track team. They have three sons and live in his hometown of Hot Springs, where he is a U.S. marshal. Jack’s father, John, was inducted into the CSC Athletic Hall of Fame on 1990, some 20 years after he had starred as a middle distance runner for the Eagles.Â
